A new little CD set I've been planning that takes place the Monday before Relentless. I hope you enjoy.

~ ~ ~

“Remind me again why we had to take this route back?”

That was the question Adam Grant had as he looked over to the driver’s seat, where Jake Chandler was currently driving. The pair had driven a fair bit away from home to go look at a car. “I thought we’d take the scenic route. All we ever see in Los Angeles are freeways and the city. Besides there’s nothing wrong with seeing a little bit of nature.”

Adam nodded his head with a sigh. “Sure. Look, have you decided on what you wanted to do with the car you dragged me out of town to see? You think she will like it?”

“Oh yeah, I’m sure O.E. would love it. Her birthday is coming up next month, and I wanted to surprise her. That’s why we went out of town, so she wouldn’t find out as easily. She thinks you and Paige are taking me to see an opera.”

“Opera? I don’t think Paige would enjoy those. But….if you like it, why didn’t you go ahead and make an offer to the guy for the car? I don’t want to have to come out here again in the middle of nowhere.” Adam told him. Jake had asked him to come in case he decided to buy the car, so one of them could drive it back.

“I want to get it checked out by a mechanic. Make sure everything is working like it’s supposed to. It’s an old car, so you have to be sure. But I think O.E. would love a Corvette.” Jake told him as he finished off the last remnants of a 64 oz. Coke he had sitting on the center console. You could tell it was almost empty by the loud slurping sounds.

“Do you know a mechanic who can come check it out?”

“Well I used to leave that stuff to Mallory, but I doubt that’d be a good idea anymore. So I asked one of the guys at work, you know Jeremy in travel, to see if he could recommend someone. He’s always getting his car fixed by the guy.” Jake said as they continued through countryside. “I figured if he was using the guy to get his car constantly fixed, that’s one less name I have to consider for the mechanic I’ll hire.”

“You mean you asked Jeremy for his mechanic….so you didn’t hire the one he recommended?" That was some fuzzy logic for Adam, but Jake only nodded with a smile.

“Yeah, there’s a lot of mechanics. It’s good to weed out the bad ones if you’re going to hire somebody. He gets his car fixed by this guy like every other month, so that guy’s probably pretty shady. So that’s one less name to consider. Pretty smart, huh?” Jake looked rather proud of himself.

Adam, on the other hand, looked at his friend with a more than curious expression on his face. Deciding not to argue it, he shrugged his shoulders and forgot about it when he saw Jake pull into the dirt parking lot of what looked to be a biker bar. “Why are we stopping? We got another 30 minutes to get back home.”

“It won’t be long. I need to use the bathroom, and I don’t think there’s another store for the next couple miles.” Jake parked, and climbed out. Adam looked down to the Big Gulp in the console, and stepped out with him. “This looks like a pretty cool place to me.”

Adam didn’t feel the same way as he looked at the row of motorcycles all lined up. “Yeah, a cool place if you want to get mugged maybe. Sure you can’t hold it till we get back to Los Angeles? You can use the one in our apartment.”

“No thanks. Scarlett told me that Paige doesn’t like letting visitors use the bathroom. It won’t take but a minute, and you can get a drink if you want...on me!” Jake headed for the door, with Adam in tow behind him.

“Scarlett didn’t tell you the whole story on that, I don’t think.” He added as they walked through the saloon doors into the ….Hell’s Hideaway Bar.

He had a bad feeling about this already.

Forgot to add this to the first part. Obviously though, everything is off camera.

~ ~ ~

Jake pulled the door open before Adam headed cautiously inside the biker bar. The Future Shock Director glanced around, taking in the scenery as Jake stepped in behind him. Across from them was a long wooden bar with a few chips taken out of it, a row of stools from one end to the other with bikers taking most of the seats. A glance to the left showed the jukebox and a few tables. One of those tables was hosting an arm wrestling contest, and had drawn an audience. On the other side was a pair of doors, one with a half moon on it and the other with a full moon.

To say they stood out was an understatement. Several of the bikers looked back to see the two, making them both feel like they were on display. Jake leaned towards his friend. “You think that’s the bathroom over there?”

Adam looked to see where Jake was pointing, at the doors with the moon and half moon on them. “I guess. Are you absolutely sure you don’t want to wait till we get home?” He tried to whisper it, but Jake looked at him confused. That was due to the volume of the Led Zeppelin song playing on the jukebox. “CAN YOU WAIT TILL WE GET HOME?!” He said much more loudly, getting the attention of more bikers in the process.

Jake shrugged his shoulders. “We’re already here Get a drink, I’ll be right back.” He looked at the doors again. “I wonder which one of those is the men’s room.” Adam had no answer for him as Jake wandered in that direction to investigate. Adam stepped to one side, wanting to keep close to the door as he was wanting to leave as soon as possible.

“Where you from?” That voice caught him off guard as he saw one of the bigger bikers moving next to him. The first thing Adam noticed was his size...the next was the hunting knife attached to his belt loop. “I said….where you from?”

Adam glanced up to him, trying to keep a friendly demeanor. “Uh….born near Chicago actually.”

“Chicago….Y’HEAR THAT, BOYS? HE’S FROM CHICAGO!” That seemed to make the biker smile, and some of the other shouted the name of the city too. He looked back to Adam. “None of us know anybody from Chicago…..say, that’s a really nice watch you got there? What kind is it?”

Adam glanced down to his hand, suddenly cursing inwardly to the fact he wore it today. “Uh...Tissot.”

“Ohh, I never heard of Tissot. Can I take a look at it?” The oversized man asked, and Adam raised his wrist up a little higher. “Ohh, that’s nice. But...I got bad eyes, let me see it a little closer. Take it off.” Adam froze up for a moment, not wanting to do it before the man grabbed his wrist and stared in his eyes as he took it off himself. “I like that. Tissot, you said?”

“Yeah, Tissot.” Adam answered before he looked back to his watch in the man’s hand, and held out his own hand to take it back. “Glad you like it.

“I really do.” He then dropped it on the floor, and stepped on it. Adam could barely hear the watch crushing under his foot “Oops. Guess it slipped. I feel awful about it. You know what you should do to help me feel better?.” The biker pointed to the bar. “Buy me a beer, I’ll feel better.”

“........Sure.” He felt like he had no other choice at this point, and headed to the bar to fish out his wallet.

“You hear that, boys? Chicago is buying us a beer!” He slapped Adam hard on the back, nearly sending him into the bar. Adam took a hundred dollar bill out of his wallet, and slid it across to the bartender and glanced back to the crushed watch on the floor. “Don’t forget to tip the bartender.” Adam was boiling at this point as he took another $20 out for the bartender.

He glanced back to the doors, thinking of Jake. Part of him wanted to know if he was alright. And if he was, he wouldn’t be when he came out.

Jake studied the doors that led to the restroom. Everywhere he’d ever gone, it was made pretty clear which room was which. But here in Hell’s HIdeaway, not so much. Looking at the full moon on one door and the crescent on the other, he was stumped. A quick glance around, he saw a couple bikers at a table before gently tapping one of them on the shoulder.

“Um, excuse me. Which one of these is the men’s room?” He asked as politely as he could, causing the biker closest to him to look over his shoulder athim.

“The one with the moon on it, dumbass.”

Jake blinked a couple times, not letting the insult bother him too much before he looked back at the doors again. A full moon and a half moon. Finally deciding he needed to make a decision, he pulled the cool meta handle on the full moon door and let himself inside. Upon entering, he noticed one thing immediately. Something was missing, but he couldn’t put his finger on it…… And he wouldn’t want to, the place was filthy.

He headed towards one of the stalls, and opened the door...to immediately find out that wasn’t the one he wanted to use. The next stall door he looked in seemed a little more conducive, so he stepped inside. It wasn’t but about four seconds when he heard the door open, and the sound of two women walk in. Then he remembered what was missing: urinals. He was in the ladies’ room!

His eyes widened as he heard them heading towards his stall, and he stepped up on the toilet so they didn’t see him. The only problem with that was while they couldn’t see his feet, they certainly saw his head over the top of the stalls.

“HEY, THERE’S A MAN IN HERE!” One of them shouted before a rumbling sound came from the bar. The door opened as many bikers started to funnel in, and Jake immediately hopped up onto the dividers between the stalls. He pulled himself along them as some of the less observant bikers hadn’t seen him yet. He had a momentary feeling like he was Spider-Man, but that was soon replaced with not wanting to be killed by bikers and continued pulling himself towards where the door was.

“Where is he?! We’ll pound the little fucking pervert!” One of the men shouted as they started kicking open doors. Jake finally got across the top of the stalls, watching as the last biker seemed to have come in. With all of them looking in the stalls for him, he hopped down to the floor and ran out the door As soon as he got out, he saw a broom against the wall and slid it into the door handles to keep them shut.

He darted towards the exit as the bikers were trying to get the restroom doors open again, but couldn’t thanks to the broom. Jake glanced to Adam. “Let’s go, let’s go, let’s go!”

Adam slid off the stool, and followed after Jake to the car. The bartender went to free the bikers from the bathroom, but by that time, Jake and Adam were in the car and peeling out towards Los Angeles.

“I decided I could wait after all….”

20 Minutes Later….

Adam stared down at his bare wrist, where his watch once was. He looked up to see Jake heading out of the restroom at the ice cream shop they had stopped at. They were only 10 minutes from home at this point, and didn’t see any of the bikers they hopped weren’t following them.

“You want an ice cream cone? I’ll treat.” Jake tried to make things better. He knew about the watch. Adam had talked about it on their way back.

“No, I don’t want an ice cream cone. Let’s just go home now, if you don’t mind.” He shook his head as Jake stopped at the register and ordered himself a vanilla ice cream cone, paid for it, and headed towards the car.

“I told you I was sorry. I didn’t know that would happen.” He told him with a lick of the cone.

“I don’t want to talk about it, alright? It was embarrassing enough, and do me a favor. Don’t be telling people about this whole thing, okay?”

Jake’s eyes widened a bit. “Not even Gillie? She’s gonna be curious, you know. She’s very inquisitive.”

“Fine, whoever you tell, just make sure they don’t go blabbing it, okay?” He was trying to calm himself down as they passed through the city limits of Los Angeles. “I hope you learned something from all this.”

Jake nodded with a smile, holding his cone in one hand and the wheel with the other. “I did!”

“Good, what was it?”

“I’d have made an awesome Spider-Man!” He said proudly as Adam’s face fell into his hands.
